Devon Montgomery Johnston III, better known by his nickname, DJ, is a recurring character in the Cars series. Originally making his debut in Cars, DJ has made many subsequent appearances. He is part of the gang of delinquents that cause terror around Radiator Springs, and is often seen as an antagonist, although he has been shown to be an ally on some occasions.

History

Cars

In Cars, DJ and the other tuners are driving along the Interstate when they notice a sleepy Mack. They decide to have fun with him, with DJ playing Kenny G's Songbird to cause Mack to sleep, until Snot Rod's loud sneezing causes them to flee the scene. DJ later appears in the epilogue when he and the other tuners are caught by Sheriff and impounded. They are later sent to pull Bessie, who splattered hot tar on them.

Cars: The Video Game

Cars: The Video Game

In Cars: The Video Game, DJ and his friends are first seen in the cutscene for Delinquent Road Hazards, in which he tells Lightning that the road is closed, only for him to respond by challenging them to a race. After losing, they tell McQueen that it "isn't over", and then flee the scene. Later, the tuners are hired by Chick Hicks to rob Mack of Lightning's Gear. DJ drives in front of Mack to put him asleep, while Boost jumps onto the roof with the help of Snot Rod's ramp, and Wingo collects the gear that falls out. Once Lightning hears the news, he immediately rushes out to the highway, and steals back the gear that was stolen. The tuners are then arrested by Sheriff.

Cars: Mater-National: Championship

Though, he does not actually appear in the game, in Vehicleinfo.dat he is listed as a non-playable character which possibly suggests that he was intended to appear.

Cars Toons

Tokyo Mater

In Tokyo Mater, DJ, Boost and Wingo are drifting recklessly on the main road, before they get caught by Sheriff. Once Mater sees their modifications, it leads him into his story of how he was a highly modified drift racer once.

Spinning

Ramone and DJ in Spinning

In Spinning, DJ is in the crowd watching Guido showing off his sign spinning talents. Ramone tells him to put on some music to add to the show.

The World of Cars Online

In The World of Cars Online, the tuners appear at random times, being chased by Sheriff throughout the various roads the game has to offer. They can also be raced against if the player does not wish to race against real players.

Cars 2: The Video Game

In Cars 2: The Video Game, DJ appears as a playable character, and can be downloaded in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. He is a medium weight, and he has more power than speed.

Cars: Fast as Lightning

In Cars: Fast as Lightning, DJ is an unlockable playable character. He has two paint jobs, Neon and Stay Gold, and is the only Delinquent Road Hazard to not have his own shop or building.

Other appearances

In Mater Saves Christmas, DJ and his gang helped Chick steal supplies from the townsfolk. He was later caught and arrested.

In The Pit Stop, DJ is once again arrested for speeding.

Trivia

  • There have been many hints that DJ's hometown may be Tokyo, Japan, although there has been no official confirmation.
  • Originally, the die-cast toy of DJ incorrectly showed him with light blue stripes on his sides instead of the green ones he had in the film. This was corrected with later releases of that toy, from 2009 to 2014. However, 2015's incarnation of his die-cast returned to the incorrect blue striping.
  • In the Italian version, he is voiced by Italian Formula One driver Jarno Trulli.
  • DJ can be heard playing Rollin' in the Rearview by Headbone and Jabu.
