Before the events of Cars, James joined the Vitoline racing team somewhere in the mid 1980s.
Cars
In Cars, James competes in Dinoco 400 race at the the Motor Speedway of the South, Motor City, United States, which was the final race of the Piston Cup season. During the race, an accident occurred between almost all of the competitors which was caused by Chick Hicks. During the crash James collided with Haul Inngas and Billy Oilchanger. He did not receive any serious injuries and was able to continue racing. He finished right behind The King, Chick and McQueen and the three-way tie.

Somewhere between the events of Cars and Cars 3 James most likely retired from the Piston Cup and was replaced by Brick Yardley, who would later be replaced by Chase Racelott.

Official profiles
- Vitoline, a fuel additive vitamin company, provides fuel for older active cars. Sponsoring a race car seemed like a good way to get that message across to their costumers and they hired the right car for the job! Senior racer James Cleanair has been racing for twenty years and shows no signs of slowing down!
