On February 18th, 2001, during the Daytona 500, Dale Jr.'s father Dale Sr. was killed in a racing accident while trying to protect his drivers Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr. who were the two leaders to which Waltrip won and Jr. came home 2nd. 3 years later on February 18th, 2004, Dale Jr. won his first Daytona 500. In 2007, after having a falling out with his stepmom Teresa Earnhardt, Dale Jr. left DEI and went to drive the #88 car for Rick Hendrix with the National Guard and Mountain Dew as his sponsers. He won at Michigan on Father's Day June 15th, 2008, and then 4 years later, he won at Michigan.

Ralph Dale Earnhardt Jr. (born October 10, 1974) is a former NASCAR driver who performed the voice of Junior in Cars. He is the son of NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale Earnhardt, as well as the grandson of both NASCAR driver Ralph Earnhardt and stock car fabricator Robert Gee, the brother of Kelley Earnhardt-Miller, the half-brother of former driver Kerry Earnhardt, the uncle of driver Jeffrey Earnhardt, the stepson of Teresa Earnhardt, and the older half-brother of Taylor Nicole Earnhardt-Putnam.
