The Silver Racer Series, referred to as the Silver Series in early promotional material, was a cross-category merchandising range based on an original Cars storyline, the first in the Transcontinental Race of Champions series of similar designs. Toys and apparel give the World Grand Prix racers from Cars 2 a silver makeover, with an original storyline revealed in a special "silver edition" of The Official Magazine.[1][2]

The Silver Racer Series designs were first released in the Mattel toy line, as six Kmart-exclusive models available only at a special Cars Collector's Day events. Alongside the next event introducing additional characters, Disney announced plans to launch a broader "Silver Series" range in spring 2013.[3] The storyline concept was introduced in a special May 2013 issue of The Official Magazine., while additional toys and games by Mattel and Carrera launched for purchase. Toys R Us and Smyths Toys stores held special in-store events to promote the series, where attendees could pose with life-size recreations of Lightning McQueen and Mater.[4]

Storyline

When Lightning McQueen is inducted into the Piston Cup Hall of Fame, his international friends (the World Grand Prix racers from Cars 2) come to Radiator Springs and celebrate with new silver paint schemes, and a race around Radiator Springs. According to the 2015 US Mattel cardbacks, the occasion inspires them to create the Transcontinental Race of Champions.
