Checkered flag, here we come!

The next generation of the Pixar Cars Wiki will officially launch this October. Until then, we have a truckload of important work to complete... and the whole pit crew to assemble!

Here are some straightforward editing projects we're working on, and how you can help! Please take a look below and see if any topics interest you, and consider contributing however you can – we'd be extremely grateful! Not to mention... did you hear something about a Lightning League? Say, if you were one of our early access members, you'd have quite some time for a head start... :D

List of characters

Word on the street, the list of characters has gotten an upgrade...

A little less sleep-inducing, huh? Now if only it would update itself, each and every time we added a new page... who here has ever remembered to update it? Certainly not us.

Luckily... NOW IT DOES! Thanks to the Cargo extension (local documentation coming soon), we're able to easily build extensive, sitewide databases, that can efficiently store and update shared info across multiple different pages. Each and every time a {{character infobox}} appears on a page, the image, name, and series origin defined within go straight into the Characters table, which tells the official gallery list to instantaneously add them. It also means any edits to the template field are immediately reflected! Cool, right?

Just one problem... what if a character doesn't have an infobox? Namely, everyone on the list of implied characters? Or what about those who share one?

Fear not, for that is where our mission becomes clear... we've created special, "invisible" definition templates for cases like this, which can be added on the bottom of the aforementioned page. After opening the editor, scroll down to the bottom and look for the following text:

<div style="display: none;">

<!-- Add infobox entries for the [[list of characters]] below this line! -->

{{Mentioned infobox|name=Aimee Curber |first_mention=Car Finder Game }}

<!-- End of infobox entries -->
</div>

The image updates automatically with The World of Cars Online's famous "Lizzie Edition" identifier badge... (Some creative liberties have been taken for sake of reference...) Also, you won't have to worry about adding a (mentioned only) note, that also creates itself.

Blank template Complete example
{{Mentioned infobox
 |name= Name goes here
 |first_mention= ''Title'' goes here
}}
{{Mentioned infobox
 |name=Aimee Curber
 |first_mention=''[[Car Finder Game]]''
}}

In summary, we're striving to flesh out the new-and-improved list of characters with each and every officially named Cars character; characters with pages (aka the vast majority) can handle themselves, but mentioned-only characters like Jenny or Dale Earnhardt need a little bump draft. The ultra tl;dr version:

Beautifying infoboxes

Speaking of Mr. {{character infobox}}, the poster child of data display has some new Bling Bling of his own... (let's never say that again...)

A popular community request, inspired by the holy texts Pixarpedia and Meet the Cars themselves, you can now set a unique {{{title_color|}}} for the header and section banners. The {{{text_color|}}} within can also be changed from white to black when the contrast requires. The {{{title_color|}}} parameter is designed to take in a six-digit hex value (i.e. #333333), but it also accepts a long list of preset, named values, from red to blanchedalmond – You can probably find one that suits your needs. Otherwise, we recommend using https://imagecolorpicker.com/ to pull a color palette straight from an image of your choice.

Target goals:

  1. Recreate all of the color associations from Pixarpedia by adding to all its included characters
  2. Fulfill design variants for the major characters (list forthcoming)
  3. Situate all the ortho-s already compiled by I1P3GYTR9 (talk), listed in full here.
