Strip "The King" Weathers is a major character in the Cars franchise. He is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a bright Dinoco-blue paint scheme, paying homage to the famous real-life stock car used by his voice actor and nick-namesake, Richard Petty. Introduced in Cars, the King is a more than 20-year racing veteran,^[1] having won a record-breaking seven Piston Cups – a feat matched only by his friend and colleague Lightning McQueen, the rookie sensation during Weathers' retiring season. The King would later return to the circuit as a coach in Cars 3, acting as crew chief for his nephew, Cal.

In Cars, when Darrell Cartrip and Bob Cutlass are introducing The King, Chick Hicks, and Lightning McQueen to the audience, they describe Weathers as having been "Dinoco's golden boy for years" and speculate on whether or not he will be able to pull off one last victory in the final race of his career.

December 27 - During an interview at the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion Event, creative franchise director Jay Ward confirmed new Cars projects are in development.^[5]
