Tall Tale was one of the many conceptual openings for Cars 2 that did not make it into the final product.

Plot

The scene starts off with a bunch of fans heading towards the racing stadium and soon transitions to reflect the opening race from the first movie. Lightning McQueen is seen swiftly passing other racers in the process, but two racers end up blocking him preventing him to pass. Despite this, McQueen jumps on top of the two cars with one yelling at him "to get off of him". Bob Cutlass states that McQueen pulled off an amazing move to take first place as the race heads into the final lap of the Dinoco 400. Darrell Cartrip states that McQueen really wants his third Piston Cup. A race car in clown makeup soon arrives on the track catching up to McQueen, with him questioning said racer. It is revealed that the clown race car is a bunch of clown pitties and they start to mess with McQueen as he tries to race.

Darrell mentions that the clown pitties are the last thing a racer wants to see on the track and questions why they're allowed on the track and claims to not find them funny. Mater soon enters the scene to save McQueen from crashing into a pie allowing the clown pitties to crash into it instead. Mater is shown flying through the air carrying McQueen, which mimics the jump McQueen did from the first movie. Both make it back onto the track with McQueen being glad to see his friend as he "saved his life". However, Mater claims that is not the case as he mentions ninjas with McQueen responding in confusion regarding them. Ninjas soon appear on the track and throw blades at McQueen and Mater. McQueen screams and begs for Mater to speed up after being threatened with Mater knowing stating that they need more speed for the "Loop of Death" with McQueen questioning it as well. Mater tells his best friend that he will stop the ninjas and tells him to go win the Piston Cup.

Mater proceeds to do a very quick countdown to launch McQueen, which gives McQueen no time to prepare. Mater soon flings him off his hook sending McQueen at ridiculous speeds leaving flames behind him. Mater comes to a stop and states, "Nobody tries to kill my best friend", as his swings around his tow hook and fights off the ninjas. McQueen is shown still going through the loop, setting it on fire in the process. McQueen completes the loop and blasts through the speedway and sets the track and checkered flag on fire as pictures are taken, and celebrations can be heard.

When the story ends, Mater is shown looking proud with a car asking if the story really happened with him stating that it did and that was his role on Team McQueen, claiming that he was a "troubleshooter". McQueen, revealed to just be at the other side of the room, tells everyone to not believe everything Mater tells them and says "I didn't even win that race." Mater drives up to McQueen saying that he hopes that they did not pay too much for an animatronic version of him and claims that it is "ugly". McQueen also questions Mater's story with "Ninjas, Mater? Really?" as he takes pictures with a fan. It ends with Mater saying that "If you take away it's ugliness it's a pretty good sound-alike!"

Trivia

  • This deleted scene was based off the Mater's Tall Tales series.
    • This also makes the connection between Mater's Tall Tales and Cars 2 stronger. It should also be noted that the intro for the scene shows off the ending of Mater the Greater as well.
  • The idea of Mater supposedly telling a "tall tale" to a bunch of folks would make it into the final product of the film.
  • Bob Cutlass appears in this scene.
    • However, Bob does not appear in the final product for Cars 2.
  • Darrell's name is spelt at "Daryl", as a more simple version of his name.
  • When Darrell Cartrip speaks again the subtitles say "Cutlass" instead of Darrell or Cartrip making an error.
  • Darrell states that McQueen wants to win his third Piston Cup, which confirms McQueen had only two Piston Cups during early production of the movie.
  • The race would have parodied the Dinoco 400 from Cars as it shares a few shots similar to it.
  • The tall tale seems to have taken inspiration from both Mater the Greater and Tokyo Mater as stunts and ninjas are featured in it.
  • The fighting moves Mater performs in the deleted scene were seemingly reused during the London fight as he does similar motions during it.
  • This is the only deleted scene to not have a follow up on why it was cut.
    • The scene was most likely cut due to the team having a hard time continuing the story after the sequence ended.
  • This is the only deleted scene to be shown being storyboarded.
    • Interestingly, the person who was storyboarding the scene was Brian Fee, who would become the director of Cars 3 6 years later.
