American Car was the second pitch for Cars. It would serve as the basis for the final product released in 2006, with a lot of similarities and differences.

Plot

Similar to the beginning of Cars, the story started out with a racer, "Lightning McQueen", he's a famous rookie race car, that was fast on track, on the verge of become the first rookie to win a Piston Cup, eventually later on Lightning would finish in a tie for the race. He was arrogant, cocky and self-centered but he was about to learn a good leasson that would change his life... afterwards, McQueen and Mack would travel to California to make it to the tiebreaker race, but before that his hauler decided to stop by the Top Down Truckstop to wash off. Lightning impatient, comes out of his trailer and looks for Mack but he gets distracted with the cars there, who are excited to see him. Mack returns and leaves McQueen behind while he tries to chase down himbut as well as in the film, Lightning follows the wrong truck. He get Lost and starts to panic while entering a graveyard without knowing where to go, scared he runs away taking with him a piece of metal, with which he breaks the road only to end up in Radiator Springs (aka: Autocoaster at the time). As Lightning is racing down the road at high speeds, he passes and awakens Sheriff, the local police officer, who then begins chasing McQueen. Scared, Lightning drives through the town accidentally crashing into Mr. Windshield store. After Sheriff catches Lightning, he is put in the Radiator Springs Municipal Impound by Mr.windhsield where McQueen will be severely reprimanded by Sally for derailing the business of Mr.Windhsield who will subsequently close his small store leaving the town.

Lightning is asked to do a race in Radiator Springs to attract customers, but he refuses, and chooses to do standard Community Service instead. While he is sleeping, he has a nightmare where Doc Hudson, Mater and Sheriff have put his engine in a steamroller. He tries to escape by driving through the fence, and Sheriff chases him with his siren and puts McQueen to work while Mater's engine is into Lightning body then, Mack comes back, and he mistakes Mater for McQueen. Mater gets into Lightning trailer, and Mack drives away when he tries to get Doc and Sheriff to get Mater back, but they want him to continue fixing the road, when he wakes up, and finds himself in his regular body, he decides to change his mind and to the race instead. But before that, Lightning needs to go to the Traffic School if he wants to race on the streets. Sheriff jokes about McQueen having a crush for Sally and he denies it. Sally is annoyed to because he's late for the class, she continues with her class but she's interrupted by Lightning arrogant comments. He must learn how to indicate a left turn but he says he doesn't need that on a race track. Sally obligates Lightning to wear headlights and rearview mirrors and on their way, Sally tells him about Stanley (originally Steamer), the town's founder. Sally teaches McQueen how to park but his arrogant atittude it's not helping until he does it on his own way. When Lightning is ready to race in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix near the end of the race, McQueen crashes.

During the scene where McQueen and Sally are cruising there was going to be a karaoke night, where Flo shows her singing talent she learned during her Motorama Girls days and Ramone starts his story. Some Motorama Girls have came to Radiator Springs from Detroit, they had a chaperone, who broke down, and that's why they were in Radiator Springs. They drank Fuel, they danced the conga, and Red gave them car washes, then they came to Ramone's Body Work to get paint jobs. Finally, on the last car, Ramone dropped his air brush and saw Flo for the first time. The next day, the Motorama Girls left, and Flo stayed.

Lightning and Sally were seeing a spy movie, featuring McMissile, while to the theatre on their first date at the end of the story.

  • One of the paintjobs they had in mind for McQueen was blue instead of red.
  • Originally Sponsor for lightning was ACME and Corrosion Seal, a product that appears to help cars stop corrosion from destroying their metal but then they changed it for Rust-eze.
  • Sally was originally intended to be a Mustang.
  • Mia and Tia were going to be yellow waitress at Top Down Truckstop.
  • Chick's original name was going to be "Chick Murphy".
  • it's unknown if Lightning in the end of the movie raced in the Los Angeles Speedway.
  • The winner of the Radiator Springs Grand Prix was an unknown Hot Rod Racer.
  • In a concept art Luigi can open his door while waving the starting flag, this idea was made with Cars on the Road.
  • After Lightning's crashes into Radiator Springs Luigi's store closes down and Luigi goes away for unknown reasons.
  • Luigi may have leaved the town and closed up his shop for supplying McQueen with bad tires during the race that caused his crash.
  • On another scene, possibly a nightmare McQueen was going to be smashed.
  • Mr. Windshield had 2 different versions, in the first draft a truck and in the second it was going to be a yellow Packard Clipper.
  • A character with the same shape as Smokey, is present in the story.
