The scene starts off with a group of fans heading towards a racing stadium and soon transitions to reflect the opening race of  the first Cars movie. Lightning McQueen is seen swiftly passing other racers, however two end up blocking him on the tracks. In order to pass them, McQueen jumps on top of the two cars, with one yelling at him to get off of him. Bob Cutlass states that McQueen pulled off an amazing move to take first place as the racers head into the final lap of the Dinoco 400. Darrell Cartrip jokes that McQueen really wants his third Piston Cup. A racer in clown makeup soon arrives on the track catching up to a confused McQueen. It is then revealed that the clown car is actually a group of clown pitties and they start to mess with McQueen while he races, coverring him in clown Makeup.

A race car in clown makeup soon arrives on the track catching up to McQueen, with him questioning said racer. It is revealed that the clown race car is a bunch of clown pitties and they start to mess with McQueen as he tries to race.

Darrell states that the last thing a racer wants to see is clown pitties and questions why they're allowed on the track, saying that he doesn't find them funny. Mater suddenly appears, saving McQueen from crashing into a giant pie set up by the pitties. Mater and Lightning fly through the air in a parody of Lightning's jump from the first movie (complete with Mater sticking his tongue up to lick up pie on his face) Both make it back onto the track, with McQueen exclaiming thaat Mater saved his life. Mater, however, reveals that the danger isn't over, as a group of ninjas suddenly appear, throwing blades up the pair. McQueen screams and begs for Mater to speed; Mater plans to do so in order to get through the upcoming "Loop of Death" which Lightning also questions. Mater tells Lightning  to win the Piston Cup while he deals with the ninjas, and launches Lightning, who leaves a trail of fire behind him. While Mater uses his tow hook to fights off the ninjas, McQueen (with a trail of fire still following him)  passes through the loop, setting it ablaze. Lightning blasts past the finish line, winning the race as the crowd cheers.
Darrell mentions that the clown pitties are the last thing a racer wants to see on the track and questions why they're allowed on the track and claims to not find them funny. Mater soon enters the scene to save McQueen from crashing into a pie allowing the clown pitties to crash into it instead. Mater is shown flying through the air carrying McQueen, which mimics the jump McQueen did from the first movie. Both make it back onto the track with McQueen being glad to see his friend as he "saved his life". However, Mater claims that is not the case as he mentions ninjas with McQueen responding in confusion regarding them. Ninjas soon appear on the track and throw blades at McQueen and Mater. McQueen screams and begs for Mater to speed up after being threatened with Mater knowing stating that they need more speed for the "Loop of Death" with McQueen questioning it as well. Mater tells his best friend that he will stop the ninjas and tells him to go win the Piston Cup.

As the story concludes, it is revealed to be yet another one of Mater's tall tales, which he is twllling to a group of cars in the Racing Museum. A listener asks Mater if the stories was true. He states it was, claiming that his role on Team McQueen was the be the "troubleshooter". McQueen, revealls himself on the other side of the room, telling everyone not to believe everything Mater tells them, and says that he didn't even win that race. In order to save himself, Mater claims that this isn't the real Lightning McQueen-it's an animatronic, which he claims to be an ugly representation of Lightning.
Mater proceeds to do a very quick countdown to launch McQueen, which gives McQueen no time to prepare. Mater soon flings him off his hook sending McQueen at ridiculous speeds leaving flames behind him. Mater comes to a stop and states, "Nobody tries to kill my best friend", as his swings around his tow hook and fights off the ninjas. McQueen is shown still going through the loop, setting it on fire in the process. McQueen completes the loop and blasts through the speedway and sets the track and checkered flag on fire as pictures are taken, and celebrations can be heard.

When the story ends, Mater is shown looking proud with a car asking if the story really happened with him stating that it did and that was his role on Team McQueen, claiming that he was a "troubleshooter". McQueen, revealed to just be at the other side of the room, tells everyone to not believe everything Mater tells them and says "I didn't even win that race." Mater drives up to McQueen saying that he hopes that they did not pay too much for an animatronic version of him and claims that it is "ugly". McQueen also questions Mater's story with "Ninjas, Mater? Really?" as he takes pictures with a fan. It ends with Mater saying that "If you take away it's ugliness it's a pretty good sound-alike!"

Tall Tale was one of the many conceptual openings for Cars 2 that did not make it into the final product.

Plot

The scene starts off with a bunch of fans heading towards the racing stadium and soon transitions to reflect the opening race from the first movie. Lightning McQueen is seen swiftly passing other racers in the process, but two racers end up blocking him preventing him to pass. Despite this, McQueen jumps on top of the two cars with one yelling at him "to get off of him". Bob Cutlass states that McQueen pulled off an amazing move to take first place as the race heads into the final lap of the Dinoco 400. Darrell Cartrip states that McQueen really wants his third Piston Cup. A race car in clown makeup soon arrives on the track catching up to McQueen, with him questioning said racer. It is revealed that the clown race car is a bunch of clown pitties and they start to mess with McQueen as he tries to race.
