"Never Give Up, Mater!" is a comic written by Gabriele Panini, with illustrations by Valentino Forlini and Michela Frare. It was featured in Issue #27 of the Official Magazine.

Plot synopsis

Sarge is running a "survival test" for his boot camp students, and Mater asks if he can join. Sarge warns him of the difficulty, but he confidently takes it on.

The test begins, and Mater joins T.J., Murphy, and Frank Pinkerton in driving a steep, hilly endurance course, quickly realizing that the test is harder than he expected. T.J. notices Mater struggling and wanting to give up, so he shows him a trick for easily driving up hills, by patiently building up speed then rushing forward all at once. Mater picks up the technique quickly and manages to push on to the next trial.

The trainees arrive at a vast chasm, under which lies a vast mud pond. They deduce that they have to cross it, but wonder how they are supposed to do so using only the small, wooden ramp Sarge has provided them. T.J. boldly tries jumping it, only to plummet straight into the mud. Mater again gets disheartened, saying he'll never make it across, but a stern rally from Sarge motivates him to try something else. Mater suddenly has an idea – he clips his tow hook on the far wall, then uses T.J.'s advice from earlier to build enough momentum to release and accelerate across. Since the four simply have to make it to the other side, Mater uses his hook to tow the others up the wall and out of the pond.

Sarge commends Mater for solving the challenge, and presents him with his special "Ribbon of Valor," though Mater tiredly longs for a shower instead.
